New Volunteer Fire Fighter Certification Course (Block Courses)
A certification course accredited by the Pro Board. The Volunteer Fire Fighter Certification course is designed to prepare the student to perform most fire ground functions under the supervision of an officer or experienced fire fighter. This highly structured course is taught through both classroom lectures and hand-on training.
This course is broken down into four individual blocks that must be completed at an approved location, within a 24-month period. Specific topics include:
Block I Orientation and Safety, Fire Department Communications, Fire Behavior, Building Construction, Personal Protective Equipment, Portable Extinguishers, Ropes and Knots, Rescue and Extrication, Forcible Entry
Block 2 Ladders, Ventilation, Water Supply, Fire Hose, Fire Streams, Sprinkler & Alarm Systems, Loss Control
Block Three: Fire Hose, Fire Streams, Loss Control, Prevention & Public Education, Fire Control
Block 4 Fire Control, Hazardous Materials A&O, Fire Prevention and Public Education, Review and Critique, Certification Examination
This course is recommended for all volunteer fire fighters.
Course Hours: 160 Prerequisite: First Responder Minimum Enrollment: 20 (for a contract course) Required Text: IFSTA’s Essentials of Firefighting, 4th edition, DOT Emergency Response Guidebook, current edition, and IFSTA's Hazardous Materials First Responder, 3rd edition, available from the Bookstore at 1-800-538-0762.
